Polymers and plastics have had a major role in creating economical, ecological and social progress. Owing to its properties of being lightweight, non–breakable, versatile, non-permeable, low cost and non-conductor of electricity, plastics have been successful in replacing wood, metal, glass, stone, ceramics etc.

Plastics are made up of polymers derived from organic compounds. Products of petrochemical plants i.e. resins (polymer) are used as raw materials and mixed with colouring agents, softeners and additives to get the desired properties in the end product.

There are two groups of plastics:

  • Thermoplastics - which melt when, heated and can be remolded easily.
  • Thermosets - which does not melt and cannot be remoulded.

Some common plastics are Polyethylene terephthalate, Polystyrene (Styrofoam), Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon), Polyvinylidene Chloride (Saran), Polyethylene, LDPE and HDPE, Polyepoxide (Epoxy) etc.

The growth of end-user industries such as construction, packaging, aerospace, clothing etc. ensures a huge demand for plastics and polymer manufacturing. The emerging economies will continue to develop more efficient companies that produce higher quality plastics.
