Vermicompost, is a resultant product of a composting procedure which utilizes different types of worms, for example, red wigglers, white worms, and different night crawlers to make blend of spoiled food waste/veggies, bedding materials, and vermicast (worm castings). Vermicompost mostly uses two types of worms namely Red Wigglers (Eisenia foetida) or Eudrilus eugenae rarely found in soil and are adapted to the special conditions in rotting vegetation, compost, and manure piles.

Conventionally, it is the practice by which worms are used to convert organic materials (basically wastes) into a humus-like material known as vermicompost. The goal is to process the material as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The process of vermicast can be done on a small scale by an individual with household organic wastes, on a large-scale by farmers with manure or by the food industry using organic wastes such as fruit and vegetable cull materials.

The market of vermicompost is primarily driven by the advantage offered such as enriching the soil, increasing harvest yields and suppressing plant disease. The key feature of compost produced by earthworms is that it is 100% organic. There are no harmful chemicals and it does not need to be mixed with anything. The use of vermicompost provokes the germination of seeds, stronger growth of the plant and the improvement in the crop yield.

Vermicomposting produces a material that is naturally designed to benefit plants in numerous ways. The most significant benefit of vermicompost is that the nutrients in earthworm are very easily absorbed by the roots of plants. Vermicompost is not easily flushed from the soil like chemical fertilizers do because of the worm mucus that it contains. Plants can absorb the nutrients and get the maximum benefit.

Also, vermicompost help plants to become disease resistance by repelling plant pests. Basically, it reduces the need for pesticides and encourages healthy root growth. The growing need to promote soil health will ensure the use of vermicompost products in the years to come.

On the flip side, few factors such as not all food are suitable for earthworm especially acidic/ highly salty food, dairy and greasy foods which earthworm do not like is likely to hamper the market of vermicompost. Moreover, high or low temperature, highly affect survival & performance of earthworm. Also, it is very time consuming on harvesting is another major factor which limits the market.
