Vegetable Oil Market to Expand With the Advent of New Technique to Boost the Production from Plant Leaves
A professor hailing from the University of Missouri-Columbia has come up with a way to amplify the production of triacylglycerol, which is known as the primary component of vegetable oil. This technique would allow manufacturers to harvest oil from leafy plants, which also have its usage in several other applications.
Since time immemorial, people across the world have been obtaining vegetable oil from plants to use as fuel and food. Vegetable oils carry numerous health benefits, such as help in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases and also lower down cholesterol levels. In the technique invented by Thelen researchers used the gene-editing tool called CRISPR to extract a family of genes found to be in charge of the regulation of fatty acid production in the Arabidopsis leaves, which is the most commonly used plant by scientists to study the biochemistry of plants. Furthermore, the results of the study were published in a journal named Nature Communications.
The research study revealed that three proteins are present in plants that do not let the plants synthesize fatty acids in the presence of sunlight. The research team went on to say that they can turn off the cognate genes with the use of CRISPR. As a result of that, the plants would be able to produce a higher quantity of triacylglycerol in the leaves, and not just in the seeds.
As stated by Thelen, this process could lead to cheaper and greater production of vegetable oils, thereby boosting the growth of the global vegetable oil market. It would also result in the possibility of multiple uses for crops like sorghums. In addition to that, it would also place much less burden on soybeans as a higher-oil seed. The research process has already been started, and the testing is going on to confirm its viability. If the result comes out to be positive, upon the completion of the testing process of the method in the crops, it would definitely be a major breakthrough for the vegetable oils industry.
