Sensor refers to any machine, device, subsystem, or module used to detect changes in its surroundings and then send back that information to other electronics. Experts believe that the Sensor for Smartphones industry market may grow in double digits by the year 2021 due to the new technologies being developed. These technologies are heavily dependent on sensors, and thus its production is expected to rise.
Recently, as per research, indoor positioning of navigation services has been made possible. It uses several types of sensors on a smartphone. Observed landmarks and Network sensors are used to allow estimation of a definite position.
Motion and position sensors like gyroscope, magnetometer, and accelerometer are used to estimate the displacement of the user, and various other sensors are used as well—this approach, known as PDR (Pedestrian Dead Reckoning).
This research has made an effort to apply an in-depth learning approach to pedestrian dead reckoning. Recurrent and convolutional networks take out hidden correlations between the sensors, enabling them to cope with sensor noise. Barometer data is also used to recognize the change in the floor.
The system predicts the trajectory of a person through data collected by their smartphone with the usage of sensors such as gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer, in addition to several environmental and network sensors like WiFi and Barometer. This system provides a high – rate estimation of the relative positioning of the user. With the use of Kalman's filter, PDR’s Drift is corrected using WiFi that predicts the user's position each time a WiFi scan is received. At last, Kalman's filter is adjusted by using a map free projection method. This method considers the physical constraints present in the surroundings like corridors, doors, etc., and project prediction on the potential walkable paths.
This development is commendable as outdoor navigation services are present worldwide, are neither reliable nor universal for indoor positioning.
Parallel with this development in the Sensors for Smartphone Industry Market, Samsung is set to transform one of its DRAM fabs into a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor (CIS) line in the year 2021. This may lead to an increase in its CIS production by 20%. Samsung is determined to achieve this agenda as premium image sensors are high in demand. All-new smartphone products have around three to five cameras; thus, an increase in camera leads to a rise in image sensors.
