Screening refers to looking for cancer or any other ailment before an individual has any disease symptoms. It enables medical personnel to detect cancer at an early stage, which leads to easier and better treatment.
Breast screening is done to detect breast cancer at an early stage. A mammogram is the first part of the process. It is basically an x-ray of each breast taken while carefully compressing the breast. Mammograms can help in finding small changes in the breast tissue, which through further investigation may lead to finding cancer in its early stage.
Recently, a new way to perform breast cancer screening has been developed known as Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT), which provides for several advantages over digital mammography like improved cancer detection and less number of false-negative reports.
The main disadvantage to Digital Mammography is that screening often leads to overlapping of tissue, which makes it hard for cancer to be found, and additional imaging needs to be recalled. Digital Breast Tomosynthesis solves this problem as it has a camera that moves in an arc over the breast and acquires images at different angles. The pictures are then processed into 3-D like images that can be scrolled, a millimeter at a time. This process makes it easier for medical personnel to find breast cancer as it feels like one is combing through the breast tissue instead of only studying flat pictures of it.
Digital Breast Tomosynthesis is far more advantageous than Digital Mammography. To conclude, researchers gathered more than 380,000 screening examinations and compared the performance between DBT and mammography. They found in research that DBT is more sensitive and specific in determining breast cancer; however, it remains to be seen its impact on a patient’s survival.
This study was based on past ones which showed that DBT had improved performance outcomes when it comes to breast cancer screening. It enables one to detect cancers that have favorable prognostic criteria, which means that patients who are diagnosed with this cancer type will have more treatment options.
DBT has also been found beneficial for women who have mammographically dense breasts or those who have a higher proportion of glandular tissue in comparison to fatty tissue. This is because it is hard to see inside dense tissue, which is considered a risk factor for cancer.
The research also showed a higher rate of cancer detection with DBT compared to Digital Mammography in the case of heterogeneously dense breasts.
This study has contributed to other studies concerning DBT, which are steadily growing in number as DBT is better at regular breast screening with fewer recalls and fewer additional imaging exams needed. These developments are significant in the market of Breast Cancer Diagnostic Market.
