Agriculture is an occupation of nurturing plants, crops, fruits, biofuels, fibres, vegetables and domestic animals. It is basically a process of cultivating fertile and suitable lands for the growth of crops and other plant based raw materials. Earlier agriculture was practiced only as a part of family need by farmers. But later agriculture took the form of trade and was practiced on a global level. Agriculture is thus a significant need of humans to sustain and develop civilization. Agriculture cultivates both food and plant based materials. Food like pulses, fruits, spices, vegetables and cereals which include grains are obtained from agriculture. Plant based materials are dyes, resins, drugs, oils and perfumes are important raw materials obtained from agricultural produce. Agriculture is the basic source of food production which in turn provides energy required by humans to sustain their livelihood. Agriculture is an occupation which helps maintain biodiversity of ecosystem.

Livestock is a necessity in agriculture. Agriculture produces forage and fodder in order to nuture domestic animals as they are vital part of agriculture. Animal husbandry is another occupation which is a subset of agriculture, Agriculture is a major segment providing food and other raw materials to humans on global level. Fertilizers, drip irrigation, pesticides, and other nutritional elements are used to produce high quality crops and obtain mass production by farmers. Fibres like cotton and silk are raw materials having application in human clothing and other apparels. Food is the largest application of agriculture. Flowers and nursery plants are also agricultural produce globally used.

Rainfall is the basic source of water for agriculture. Changing rainfall pattern has led to a shift in agricultural pattern too. Greenhouse and organic agriculture are farming techniques have been adopted by many farmers to increase crop production and overall business. Greenhouse faming includes agriculture in a glasshouse where suitable conditions for plant growth are created artificially. Sunlight, nutrients, cooling, manure, proper water for growth and agrochemicals are provided by a computer system and high yield of plants and flowers is obtained. Greenhouse farming is thus an effective technique used in crop production which is a responsible for the growth of agricultural business. Organic farming or agriculture is another technique which uses natural compost, manure, crop rotation method and biological and environment friendly pesticides and fertilizers.

Government organizations have made a mandatory set of regulations which has to be followed while doing organic farming. This farming uses scientific and ecological methods of farming to increase biodiversity and maintain ecological balance. Organic farming uses crop rotation as an effective method of farming in crop production which helps in overall agricultural development. These techniques eventually help in water saving and propesr management of water which is essential in the modern world. Modernization has led to variety of crops, foods and raw materials in agriculture. Changing climatic conditions, limited rainfall, global warming and other environmental issues have hampered agriculture in recent times. To overcome this, sustainable and modern agricultural techniques like monoculture, polyculture, intercropping, multiple cropping and green house agriculture are adopted by many farmers worldwide. Industrialization in agriculture has contributed to the rapid growth of agriculture as an occupation. Developments are been made in agriculture so as to create a sustainable environment for better future.
