Paper chemicals resemble a group of chemicals which alter and change the properties of paper. They are used to modify paper into several different ways like increasing its strength and resistance to water and increasing its brightness and changing its colour. Pulp on the other hand is lignocellulosic fibrous substance chemically or mechanically processed by separating cellulose fibres from waste paper, wood, or fibre crops. Pulp chemicals involve chemical pulping by dissolving lignin so as to extract cellulose from wood fibre. Chemical processes such as kraft process and sulphite process are used in pulping. Sulphite process uses sulphuric acid for chemical pulping. Kraft pulping involves caustic soda and sodium sulphide and is the most common technique used in chemical pulping. The most ecological and alternative method is soda pulping which utilizes sodium hydroxide for pulping.
Paper and pulp have major end user applications and are used in packaging various goods. Speciality papers are high quality papers used in graphic printing and industry based printing applications. Chemical pulps are used to produce nanocellulose. Specialty pulp grades find many applications in various industry processes.
