NALCO-GACL to set up Rs.1800-cr caustic soda plant
National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) and Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (GACL) have launched a joint venture to set up a Rs. 1800 Cr. caustic soda plant. NALCO   laid the foundation-stone of the proposed plant at Dahej in Gujarat. The new JV company GACL-NALCO Alkalies & Chemicals Private Limited, in which NALCO holds 40 per cent share capital, plans to produce 2.7 lakh tons of caustic soda per annum. The land transfer and ordering of plant equipment are in the final stages.

Axiall Unit Signs Distribution Deal with Old World Industries for Liquid Caustic Soda
Chemical company Axiall subsidiary, Axiall LLC, has entered into an agreement, making Old World Industries a distributor of its liquid caustic soda product. Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Axiall LLC is a global producer of liquid caustic soda, with four plants in the U.S., one in Canada, and a network of bulk terminals across North America. Axiall Corporation manufactures and markets chemicals and building products in the United States and internationally. It operates through two segments, Chlorovinyls and Building Products.

Solvay to sell majority stake in Solvay Indupa
Belgium-headquartered chemical company Solvay SA has announced that it has signed an agreement with Brazilian chemical group Unipar Carbocloro to sell its 70.59 percent stake in Solvay Indupa. Solvay states that the transaction is based on a total enterprise value of $202.2 million and completion is subject to the customary closing conditions, including antitrust approval. In acquiring Solvay Indupa, Unipar will strengthen its strategic position in the caustic soda and chlorine value chain extending its chemical footprint in PVC and allowing for the further development of Indupa.

Integrated Textile Park, caustic soda plant to come up in Tamil Nadu
An integrated textile park, caustic soda plant, aerospace design centre, and a bio-technology venture capital fund are going to come up in Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation partnering with a private sector company would set up a caustic soda plant at an investment of Rs. 200 Crore at Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district, while the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (TIDCO) would set up an aerospace design centre at an outlay of Rs. 350 Crore in Sriperumbudur.

Paranthan Chemicals Factory to be revived this year
Currently defunct Paranthan Chemicals Factory, the Sri Lankan chemical pioneer in Kilinochchi is to be revived and the construction of damaged buildings will commence before the end of this year. The factory was established in 1954 as Government Chemicals Factory and was destroyed due to terrorism in 1985. With the recommencement, the factory will produce the Sri Lanka’s total Chlorine requirements domestically and will save foreign exchange of around US Dollars 900,000 per year that is spent to import Chlorine. The factory can obtain its required salt from Elephant Pass saltern. Former Paranthan Chemicals Factory manufactured Caustic Soda using salt as the key raw material and was re-named as Paranthan Chemicals Corporation.

ThyssenKrupp receives contract from Atul Ltd for caustic soda plant
ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions India – formerly Uhde India – has received a contract from Atul Limited, a manufacturer of basic chemicals and derivatives manufacturer, to render engineering, lumpsum supply of cell elements and site supervision services for its caustic soda conversion project at Valsad in Gujarat. The project envisages the conversion of Atul Limited’s existing mercury cell caustic soda facility at Atul near Valsad and to set-up a 75 tonne per day (tpd) membrane cell facility. The capacity of the plant will be expandable to 100 tpd.

Uhdenora and Befar to build new Chinese caustic soda plant
Uhdenora and Befar Group have signed a contract to build a new caustic soda plant based on the NaCl ODC technology with a capacity of 80,000mt per annum (mtpa) at Binzhou City in the Chinese province of Shandong. Jointly developed by Uhdenora, ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions and Bayer MaterialScience, the NaCl ODC technology is claimed to reduce energy consumption by up to 30% compared with the conventional membrane cell process. The technology will help the new plant in reducing carbon emissions by up to 35,000mtpa.
