Traditionally, solar cells are manufactured by using silicon; however, scientists expect this practice to already be at its limit. This is because the need of the hour is efficient solar cells. In this regard, perovskite cells could be a good alternative as stacking these cells on top of traditional solar cells could lead to the creation of efficient tandem devices. Experts believe transparent solar cells could be abundantly used in the coming future on windows of household and office buildings etc. They would be the best option among all available, and generating electricity through any other method would lead to wastage.
Recently, a research team has developed new ultrathin metal electrodes that facilitated them in creating semi-transparent perovskite cells. The innovation is revolutionary, especially for Perovskite Solar Cells Market, as the new type of cells are extremely efficient and, when coupled with traditional silicon cells, could help boost the performance of both devices. Thus, this research could very well become the stepping stone for the advancement of completely transparent solar cells.
The team proved that electrodes could be made with a very thin, atomic layer of gold. The thin layer of gold was found to have high electrical conductivity, while it also didn’t interfere with the cell’s capability of absorbing light.
The evidence displayed that the novel perovskite solar cell was able to achieve 19.8% efficiency, which is a new record among all semi-transparent cells. Furthermore, when the cell was combined with the traditional silicon solar cell, the tandem device displayed an efficiency of 28.3%. The stat is way higher than the efficiency reached by silicon cells alone, i.e., 23.3%.
Generally, if a thin layer of gold is built, the nanoparticles will couple together and will collectively form small islands. The team discovered that chromium could be utilized seed layer as it enables the gold to form an ultrathin layer on top with excellent conductive properties. Chromium has large surface energy, and that’s why it can provide a good place for the gold to grow at its top. Moreover, it also facilitated the gold in forming a continuous thin film.
The research showed a whole of 5% improvement in efficiency, which is huge. This entails that essentially one can convert around 50 watts more sunlight for each square meter of solar cell material. The development is a big breakthrough in the design of tandem cell architecture which is based on the concept of the transparent electrode. The research offers an efficient route toward the evolution of traditional solar cells to perovskite and tandem solar cells.
